The Miami Dolphins are trading safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. If you feel like you are back in 2019, that would be understandable. During the 2019 season, the Dolphins traded Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, after acquiring the three-time First-Team All-Pro selection back from Pittsburgh ahead of the 2025 season, the Dolphins are shipping him off again.
And, this time, they are sending him to a division rival. According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Dolphins
are trading Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick.
Miami originally selected Fitzpatrick with the 11th overall pick in 2018. During the 2019 season, they traded him, along with a 2020 fourth-round draft pick and a 2021 seventh-round selection, to the Steelers for a 2020 first-round pick, a 2020 fifth-round pick, and a 2021 sixth-round pick. The 2025 trade saw Miami send cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Fitzpatrick and 2027 fifth-round pick.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Fitzpatrick will sign a three-year, $40 million contract with the Jets.
Fitzpatrick had been set to account for $18.8 million against Miami’s salary cap this year. With the trade, Miami will save about $5.9 million in cap space.
In 2025, Fitzpatrick started 14 games with Miami, tallying 82 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, seven passes defensed, and one interception.
The trade cannot become official until the start of the new league year on Wednesday.
