Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano took to the podium yesterday to preview the Scarlet Knights’ upcoming game against Minnesota.
The first question that was asked had to do with the injuries to tight end Colin
Weber and linebacker Moses Walker. In usual Schiano fashion, he did not reveal his hand regarding the injuries and said we would know on Saturday when the injury report comes out. Later on in the press conference, he said that Sam Brown is feeling more himself with each passing week and that he will go when he feels he is ready.
In the press conference, Schiano talked a lot about the skill of the Golden Gophers’ defense. He mentioned how they are the No.1 defense in the country right now with talented players at each level. When the conversation shifted to Rutgers’ offensive line, Schiano said that while the more experienced guys in the middle look as good as they have, the younger guys at tackle are getting better each week, and that Minnesota would be another great test for them. Minnesota defensive lineman Anthony Smith is someone whom Schiano mentioned by name that they would have to game plan for, as he already has three sacks on the year in three games.
Linebacker Maverick Baranowski and Defensive back Koi Perich were two other players Schiano mentioned by name that the Knights would have to tailor their offensive attack around.
When it came to talking about Minnesota’s offense, Schiano discussed the stable of running backs that the Gophers have. As of right now, Minnesota has three running backs with over 120 yards on the ground. Minnesota’s starting running back, Darius Taylor, missed some time earlier this season with an injury. He is expected to return in this matchup. Rutgers was able to largely shut him down last year, but with the run defense being the way it has been this year, the Knights will likely have to crowd the box against him, just as they did against Iowa.
He also discussed the talent Minnesota has at the Tight End position, particularly Jameson Geers, who had a career day against Rutgers’ defense last season. He has seven catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns so far this year.
