The Detroit Lions are entering Week 4 as three-point favorites over the Carolina Panthers in their Sunday night showdown, but some injury news from Monday could see that line shift (note: it’s already jumped to 3.5). According to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, the Panthers’ No. 1 cornerback Jaycee Horn is out indefinitely after suffering a quad injury on Sunday against the Browns.
Horn is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons with the Panthers, and he signed a four-year, $100 million extension last
offseason. He was off to another decent start to the season, allowing just five catches on 10 targets for 63 yard and two pass breakups, according to PFF.
To make matters worse for the Panthers, in Sunday’s loss to the Browns, they also lost their other starting outside cornerback Mike Jackson to a groin injury. There has yet to be an update on his status, but he suffered the injury in the first half and did not return to the game. Jackson is an eight-year vet who actually spent some brief time with the Lions in 2019, but has really turned things around lately. In 2025, Jackson produced an NFL-high 19 passes defended and also logged four interception.
Left in the Panthers’ cornerback room is fourth-round rookie Will Lee III, Akayleb Evans, and nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade. Carolina also has three practice squad cornerbacks: undrafted rookie DeVonta Smith, and two undrafted players from the 2025 class: Zion Childress and Corey Thornton. Of the three, only Thornton has any real experience at the NFL level, playing in 12 games and 127 defensive snaps last season.
This will be something to monitor as the week goes on, but I would expect the Panthers to add to that room as they prepare for a dynamic Detroit Lions passing attack that currently ranks eighth in passing yards (247.7 per game), third in passer rating (116.1), and tied for second in passing touchdowns (eight).
