In just a few weeks, Jürgen Klopp will be naming his first official squad since becoming manager of the German national team, having replaced Julian Nagelsmann shortly after the World Cup. For the September international break, Germany has UEFA Nations League matches against the Netherlands, Greece, and Serbia as Klopp looks to get Die Mannschaft steered back in the right direction after another disappointing World Cup showing. There’s a palpable air of excitement for German football fans heading
into next month and at the very least, even neutrals will be curious to see how the ex-Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, and Mainz manager fares on the international competition stage.
As was expected and made clear from his first official press conference with the DFB during his unveiling as Germany manager, Klopp has been making the rounds across Germany, having attended the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup between Bayern and Dortmund as well as Bayern’s Bundesliga opener win vs. VfB Stuttgart. He’s also already been in contact with some of the players he plans on having in his first squad as he looks to ensure all of his selections are in the right mind and level of awareness ahead of the camp in Herzogenaurach.
As per Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz has confirmed that he’s had contact with Klopp ahead of The Red’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at Anfield. “We spoke on the phone two days ago. We had never been in contact before. It was cool to finally speak to him. I was really pleased,” Wirtz revealed.
This information from Wirtz follows the confirmation that Klopp has also personally spoken with Bayern’s Jamal Musiala via a voice memo, assuring him that he is very much in the plans for the national team, and a key part of it at that. Klopp had also asked the player how his medication adjustments have been going ever since his protocols were changed after Musiala’s two, separate on-pitch collapse incidents at the end of Bayern’s preseason in friendlies against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim.
Klopp has also had conversations with Vincent Kompany, Sebastian Hoeneß, and Niko Kovac, as he wants there to be full transparency between managers of the Bundesliga sides he’s going to be picking players from for his national team squads. A harmonious relationship with the club managers is what Klopp wants and it’s what he’s been establishing so far, especially since now the international breaks will contain more matches than they used to.
