Bayern Munich may be leading SC Freiburg 2-0 at halftime, but the Bavarians have not exactly dominated every aspect of this match. Freiburg actually has more possession (63%) and has completed more passes, but Bayern has been far more dangerous when it matters.
Using a makeshift lineup, the Bavarians used goals from Dayot Upamecano (!?) and Serge Gnabry to get ahead.
The biggest difference is efficiency in front of goal. Bayern
has registered four shots on target compared to Freiburg’s zero, created two big chances, and generated 1.22 expected goals (xG) to Freiburg’s measly 0.34. The visitors have also recorded 11 touches in the opposition box, compared to just seven for Freiburg.
Bayern Munich has done an excellent job of making its opportunities count while remaining defensively solid. Freiburg can have the ball, but it has done absolutely nothing with it in the attacking third.
There is certainly room for FC Bayern to improve after the break, particularly in controlling possession and dictating the tempo. Still, a two-goal cushion, four shots on target, and a clean defensive sheet make for a pretty encouraging first half.
Bayern Munich has been clinical, SC Freiburg has been toothless, and the visitors are firmly in control where it counts — on the scoreboard.
