What is the story about?
The focus for a lot of sports fans in the Seattle area (and elsewhere) is on the victory celebration today in Seattle for the Seahawks, but there is other news for UW. Among the news is a letter by the Big Ten to the NCAA to end ‘prop bets’ for college athletics. That and more in today’s dots.
Football Dots
- Not much football news today, but there is this note about Grady Gross preparing for the NFL by winning the 2026 Kohl’s Pro Combine.
- The advantage to being ranked in the way-too-early top-25’s is that there are typically a lot more written about the team than if they weren’t in those rankings. Here is an example of one of those articles. (https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/way-too-early-top-25-pivotal-game-texas-oklahoma/) This one from CBS Sports highlights each team’s “most pivotal game”. For UW, they have highlighted the game at Nebraska. While that looks like an important game at this point, I think that it is debatable whether it is the “most pivotal” game on the schedule.
Basketball Dots
- Both the UW Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are playing tonight. The UW Women’s Basketball team is in Iowa City where they will take on Iowa tonight at 4:30 PM PT.
- The UW Men’s Basketball team will face off against Penn State tonight at 7:30 PM PT. UW will be having a book drive at the the game.
Other UW Athletics Dots
- The Big Ten Student Athlete Issues Commission has sent a letter to the president of the NCAA coming out against ‘prop’ bets involving college athletes. The Big Ten Commissioner has also voiced his agreement.
- Andrew Berg has an article on UW Softball which started their season in Texas last weekend. There was some tough competition at the UTSA Invitational, including the defending national champions, the Texas Longhorns. Despite coming out of the weekend with a 2-3 record, UW is #21 in this ranking of the Women’s Softball; beating a top-10 Nebraska team helped.
- UW has some new shirts in the team store designed by Puyallup Tribe member Chris Duenas. Proceeds support cultural preservation and youth mentorship.
