The Lane Kiffin drama seems to at least now have a light at the end of the tunnel.
Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter released a statement on Friday giving the news an announcement would be made the day after
the Egg Bowl on Kiffin’s future.
“Despite the outside noise, Coach Kiffin is focused on preparing our team for the Egg Bowl,” the statement said. “This team is on the cusp of an unprecedented season, and its imperative they feel the support of the Ole Miss family in the week ahead. An announcement on Coach Kiffin’s future is expected the Saturday following the game.”
Is there much that can be drawn from this? It is fairly vague, but it does seem ominous in the wording. There is nothing stating Ole Miss will be making the announcement on Kiffin’s future, so you could reasonably conclude another school would be announcing it.
The announcement could also be what Kiffin’s future will be with Ole Miss should the Rebels win and likely be headed to the College Football Playoff. I think most fans feel strongly if our head coach isn’t committed to staying the university cannot allow Kiffin to continue coaching the team in the playoff. There’s the theory floated out there that the CFP committee could ding Ole Miss for not having its same head coach, but if its sitting at 11-1 as an SEC school, I don’t see how the Rebels aren’t a top eight team hosting a first round playoff spot. This isn’t the same situation as Florida State with the four team playoff and a star quarterback injured.
So how should Ole Miss fans proceed in the coming week? First off, give this TEAM and its PLAYERS all the support and praise rather than focus on its coaching staff. This is truly a season that is a high water mark for the program, and it could be even more historic come next Friday afternoon.
