The main event of tonight’s (Oct. 6) AEW Grand Slam France saw Will Ospreay defend the AEW world championship against AEW International Champion Kazuchika Okada. Given their extremely lopsided win-loss record in Japan, Excalibur noted that Ospreay actually walked into this bout as the underdog, despite being the AEW world champion.
All the false finishes you can imagine happened at the end of this bout, with each man kicking out of each other’s best signature moves. That includes Ospreay’s dramatic
kick out of Okada’s Rainmaker finisher, which has beaten Will so many times throughout their past rivalry.
Okada hit weaker clotheslines later on that the AEW commentators also referred to as “Rainmaker,” but Ospreay wouldn’t be denied. Even though Okada survived Hidden Blades, a Styles Clash, and a Storm Breaker, one final Hidden Blade ultimately sealed the deal for Ospreay’s victory.
Ospreay now walks into AEW’s WrestleDream PPV as the defending world champion in the 8-man Clockwork Carnage main event title match, with Samoa Joe also qualified for one of those spots.
