On Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that linebacker Cole Christiansen and defensive end Tyreke Smith have been elevated from the practice squad for Week 3’s contest against the Miami Dolphins.
As elevated players, they will return to the practice squad following Sunday’s action.
With only four linebackers currently on Kansas City’s 53-man roster, Christiansen’s
availability was expected. The veteran was also called up for Week 2’s overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts and was on the field for 18 special teams snaps.
It is more difficult to see a path to Smith actually playing against Miami (barring injury). Defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah did pop up on Wednesday’s injury report as a limited participant with a sore quad. However, Anudike-Uzomah practiced in full the following two days and had no injury status for Sunday’s game.
Smith has bounced around the league since joining the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 as a fifth-round selection out of Ohio State. He spent last season on Kansas City’s practice squad. Despite joining the active roster late last year, he has not appeared in a game with the Chiefs.
With the Chiefs declining to elevate defensive tackle Marcus Harris as they did for the first two games, rookie nose tackle Bryson Eason appears set to make his Kansas City debut after being claimed on waivers last month.
