- Spring practices took on a more competitive feel over the weekend. The Dawgs ran about 80 plays in full pads in something that resembled a real scrimmage. Christian Caple wrote up the practice, including some promising note on an especially sharp day for Demond Williams. Caple also had lots of good things to say about freshman wide receiver Jordan Clay, who has the size, speed, and technique to add a lot to the receiving corps in his first year on campus.
- The Seattle Times also gave some updates on UW pass catchers. Their profile focuses on Decker DeGraaf in his quest to become a more complete tight end. DeGraaf has put on substantial weight since coming to Montlake. He was mostly a big play receiving threat during his breakout freshman year. He already showed more balance to his game last season. If he can continue to develop as both a blocker and a receiver, he has clear professional upside.
- DeGraaf isn’t the only tight end tryin to diversify his game. Baron Naone is slated to step into a bigger role with the graduation of Quentin Moore. Naone talked to the media about developing his own size and speed, what he learned from Moore, and how his bond with coach Jordan Paopao has helped him developed within the team’s scheme.
- Away from the gridiron, Danny Sprinkle started the complicated task of rebuilding the UW Men’s Basketball roster. The Huskies secured the commitment of Davidson transfer guard Parker Friedrichsen, a sharp-shooter who was once a four-star prospect. Friedrichsen, from Oklahoma, originally committed to both Oklahoma St. and Notre Dame before landing with Wake Forest. He spent two years with the Deacons before transferring to Davidson and having his best scoring season. The Dawgs have lacked perimeter shooting in Sprinkle’s two seasons, so the early focus on that skill is a positive, but much work remains.
- UW Softball bounced back from a shaky weekend in California by dispatching the visiting Minnesota Golden Gophers. Minnesota is not the toughest competition they will face in conference play, but the Huskies showed the ability to quickly move past a couple of disappointing results.
