The San Francisco 49ers were in a great position this offseason, as they didn’t have many major impending free agents, which allowed them to focus on adding pieces in free agency.
San Francisco’s biggest loss this offseason was wideout Jauan Jennings, who ended up signing a one-year deal worth $8 million with the Minnesota Vikings. Apart from that, they didn’t have any major losses, which was far different from the 2025 offseason, where several starters departed in free agency.
So, the 49ers ended
up having one of the better offseasons of any team in the NFL, signing Mike Evans and Dre Greenlaw, while extending some key pieces like offensive tackles Colton McKivitz and Trent Williams.
Will that be the case again next offseason? Let’s take an early look at the 2027 offseason and see who the 49ers could lose in free agency.
QB Mac Jones
One of the bigger questions for the 49ers this offseason was Mac Jones’s status, as the backup quarterback played quite well in relief of Brock Purdy last season and had shown interest in being a starter in the NFL.
But the 49ers still had him under contract for the 2026 season at a very reasonable price after Jones signed a two-year, $8.4 million deal in 2025. That question of a potential trade was quickly shut down to begin the offseason, and head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch expressed no interest in trading Jones.
Now, he’s set to be a free agent in 2026, where the 49ers could cash in on a compensatory pick given the deal Jones signs.
C Jake Brendel
The 49ers have been rolling with Brendel as their starting center for the last four seasons. He’ll be 34 this year and will enter the final year of the four-year, $16.5 million deal he signed back in 2023.
Brendel will be 35 in 2027, so extending him doesn’t seem to align with the 49ers’ goal to get younger. But San Francisco also doesn’t have a center ready to replace him right now on the roster. That will be a position to watch next offseason.
FB Kyle Juszczyk
San Francisco’s longtime fullback will enter free agency once again next season after he signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract in 2025. Juszczyk has been one of the longest tenured 49ers, with 2026 being his 10th season with the team, and he’ll be 35 in 2026.
We’ll see how the 49ers move forward in 2027 and how much longer the fullback will continue playing football.
S Ji’Ayir Brown
It’s a crucial year for Ji’Ayir Brown, who has disappointed with inconsistencies over his three-year career in San Francisco. He’s now in a contract year and is currently poised to start once again at safety for the 49ers.
The 49ers haven’t looked to invest much money at the safety position under Shanahan, so they may look elsewhere in 2027. But Brown has the opportunity to earn a solid second contract with a quality year in 2026.
LB Dre Greenlaw
Greenlaw signed a one-year deal with the 49ers this offseason, so he’ll be back on the open market next year heading into his age-30 season. He’s also got a lot riding on this season in a “prove-it” year after playing just 10 combined games over the past two years.
This could also be another compensatory pick situation if Greenlaw plays well and earns a quality contract in free agency.
