The report that Anthony Gordon could be Bayern Munich’s big transfer target of the 2026 summer transfer window came as something of a surprise. But more and more reports from (fairly) reputed outlets have since come out, confirming the Bavarians’ interest in the Newcastle United winger. But why?
Bild reporters Christian Falk and Julian Agardi, as captured by @iMiaSanMia_GER, explain Bayern’s interest:
The idea with Anthony Gordon: he can play so many positions that he wouldn’t just be a pure Luis Díaz
backup, but could also play as a center forward or right winger. Newcastle want £80 million (€92 million) for him. Bayern expects a price tag of around €60 million.
Bayern truly could use a versatile forward that can play all positions at a high level. But, as the report above indicates, the money involved with the transfer could prove to be problematic. Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze, as captured by @iMiaSanMia_GER, goes into further detail:
Anthony Gordon is open and ready for a summer transfer. Newcastle wants to keep him but also needs revenue. A realistic price is currently €60-70 million. Bayern is in talks, but Gordon also has other options (especially in England).
BFW Commentary
At the time of writing, Saudi Public Investment Fund’s sports washing project is undergoing a difficult domestic season, down to 14th place in the Premier League. The club was already forced to sell homegrown players like Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson in the 2025 summer transfer window to comply with the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rulings. That was with qualification to the Champions League. If they were to fail to qualify for Europe’s premier competition, the club may find itself in more problems.
Though the Premier League is replacing the PSR with the Squad Cost Ratio for the 2026/27, which caps all transfer spending on 85% of a team’s revenue. Furthermore, the Magpies are just 5 points off of a European spot despite their lowly league position. Just how strong their financial position will be in the summer is still unclear.
