Charlotte Knights vs. Norfolk Tides — Postponed
The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow. Game 1 starts at 4:05 p.m. CST.
Birmingham Barons 4, Rocket City Trash Pandas 3 The Barons (70-45) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with clutch RBI singles from Caden Connor and Braden Montgomery to seize a 2-0 lead. In the next frame, they plated an additional run when Mario Camilletti cashed in Michael Turner, who had doubled. After the Trash Pandas evened the contest at 3-3 in the sixth,
the score stayed that way until Birmingham walked it off with some ninth-inning chaos.
DJ Gladney led off the frame with a triple, and after a walk to Michael Turner and a subsequent advance to second on defensive indifference, runners were on second and third with nobody out. After Camilletti went down on strikes, Jason Matthews worked a free pass. With the bases juiced, William Bergolla lifted a fly to center; however, it wasn’t deep enough to score the winning run. But in a fun, yet painful twist of fate, a pitch hit the next batter up, Sam Antonacci, and Gladney strolled home with the victory.
Aside from the exciting ending, the best part of the night really unfolded on the mound. Despite earning a no-decision, starter Hagen Smith had a very effective 75-pitch outing. He threw five frames, yielding only one run on two hits and two walks, while racking up seven Ks. Reliever Andrew Dalquist allowed a pair, but Adisyn Coffey and Tyler Davis combined for three scoreless innings to close it out.
Winston-Salem Dash 5, Wilmington Blue Rocks 1
It was a home run derby kind of night for the Dash (45-68)! Jeral Perez launched a solo shot in the third to knot things up at one apiece. Then, in the fifth, Alec Makarewicz broke the deadlock with a three-run bomb to break the 1-1 tie. Kyle Lodise added on insurance tally in the sixth, belting his own four-bagger to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Starter Dylan Cumming was fantastic, spinning five frames, surrendering only one run on two hits while fanning four. The arm barn combined to fire four innings of one-hit, shutout ball.
Delmarva Shorebirds 12, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 9
Kannapolis (52-63) put on a hitting clinic tonight, but their bats couldn’t bail out their poor pitching performance. The offense got them on the board early, jumping to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a pair of doubles by Ely Brown and Caleb Bonemer. Big man, George Wolkow kept the line moving, driving in a pair with a two-bagger in the third. Ronny Hernandez followed with a two-run dinger, and just like that, the Ballers had a 5-0 advantage.
Kanny kept pouring it on as the contest continued. In the fourth, Wolkow slugged his 12th blast of the year, plating three. The 19-year-old had himself a monster of a night, going 3-for-5, with five RBIs.
Tonight’s Ballers hurlers must have taken a chapter from their big league brethren’s book. At one point, they had an 8-2 lead, but they just couldn’t hang on to it. Starter Mathias LaCombe was the only pitcher who didn’t surrender any tallies, as their relievers were tagged for 12 runs on 15 hits.
