The San Diego Padres dropped the first game of the four-game series to the San Francisco Giants, but fought back to win the next three games, including a 5-4 in on Sunday in the series finale. Michael King was supposed to make the start for the Padres, but he was pushed back a day to allow him to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in the series opener today. Kyle Hart got the start in the final game against the Giants and he was dominant over three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with no walks
and two strikeouts.
Pitching Chaos ensued for the remainder of the game for San Diego as five additional pitchers worked the remaining five innings of the contest. JP Sears returned to the mound after a rough outing on Tuesday where he threw 64 pitches and had another rough outing allowing two runs on two hits with a walk in one inning of work. The final line would have been worse for Sears if not for a nice defensive play in shallow right field by Jake Cronenworth to end the top of the fourth inning.
Griffin Canning took his turn and allowed a run on two hits over two innings. The lone run allowed by Canning came on a solo home run by San Francisco rookie Osleivis Basabe. The ball was nearly caught at the wall by Jackson Merrill, but when his wrist hit the top of the wall it flicked his glove toward the ground and the ball came out on the back side of the fence.
Jeremiah Estrada pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one walk with one strikeout and Bradgley Rodriguez pitched 0.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits, which also came via the longball, with two strikeouts. Rumored trade target and longtime Padres reliever Adrian Morejon covered the final 1.1 innings. He did not allow a hit or a walk and recorded three strikeouts.
The Padres pitching benefitted from an early lead thanks to a two-run home run by Merrill in the bottom of the second inning. The Padres tacked on two additional runs on a Jake Cronenworth infield single in the second and enjoyed a 4-0 lead after two. After Sears surrendered two runs in the fourth and Canning surrendered a run in the fifth San Diego saw its lead cut to one run and held a 4-3 lead. The Padres got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Luis Campusano singled to score Ty France to make the score, 5-3. The Giants scored their final run when Rafael Devers hit an opposite field solo home run to left field to make the score, 5-4.
The Padres head back on the road after their 5-1 homestand and begin with four games against the Diamondbacks. The first game of the series is tonight at 6:40 p.m.
