The Red Sox have to make a decision on Tommy Kahnle today. He opted out of his minor league deal with the Red Sox on Tuesday, and we’re approaching the end of 48-hour window where the team needs to call him up to prevent him from becoming a free agent. Since he would both provide a veteran presence in the clubhouse and has been great in Worcester (to the tune of a 1.40 ERA), it seems like the prudent move to clear a roster spot for him.
The spot that seems to make the most sense is Ryan Watson, who
is a Rule 5 guy and needs to be offered back to the Giants if he doesn’t stay on the Red Sox 26-man roster all season. The fact the Red Sox let Ryan Watson go three innings to close out Payton Tolle’s gem last night also makes me think it could be him. This essentially burns all his bullets and rests the rest of the bullpen before you make the switch. We’ll know more in a few hours though.
