It can be said Newcastle United is building for the future given their summer incoming business, but the club is also looking after their academy players with Matthias Jaissle sanctioning temporary departures for players who need regular senior football this season.
After a few loan deals were considered ahead of deadline day on Tuesday, only Sean Neave left the club to earn game time elsewhere.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Newcastle has accepted a loan offer from Wolverhampton Wanderers
for the 19-year-old striker, who just has to complete his medical and sign on the dotted line to make it official.
“Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed a deal to sign Newcastle United striker Sean Neave on loan, sources have told Football Insider,” O’Rourke reported. “Newcastle have accepted a loan offer for the teenager, who has already made his Premier League debut for the club.”
Sky Sports’ Keith Downie confirmed that Wolves had agreed a deal for Neave, with the forward heading to Wolverhampton.
Neave follows Rory Finneran’s own loan to Notts County. Chronicle Live’s Sean McCormick identified Neave as a particularly strong candidate, reporting that the teenager had attracted significant interest ahead of the deadline.
“Sean Neave has plenty of interest and the teenage forward has outgrown under-21s football,” McCormick reported. “He is a prime candidate to move elsewhere today.”
Neave’s academy numbers support that assessment, with the striker scoring 16 goals and supplying two assists in 26 appearances last season, performances that attracted attention from Wolves scouts. He made his first-team debut as a late substitute in the 6-1 Champions League victory against Qarabag before making his Premier League debut against Fulham on the final day of last season.
Regular opportunities were nevertheless going to be difficult to find under Jaissle this year, even after Nick Woltemade’s exit on loan to Juventus.
Yoane Wissa has started the season impressively, while William Osula remains part of the first-team picture despite his current foot injury. Newcastle also completed the €60 million-plus (£51.4 million) signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who can operate through the middle and the left wing.
Championship side Wolves should provide a good developing environment for Neave at an intermediate level between the youth ranks and the EPL, while the move will also reunite Neave with former Newcastle teammate Kieran Trippier following the veteran’s summer switch to Molineux.
