Serge Gnabry has had a refreshingly bright start to the season for Bayern Munich so far, which has been an added bonus for Vincent Kompany in the absence of Jamal Musiala, who is not making a return to action until sometime in November. The German international has already tallied 2 goals and 3 assists from a total of 6 appearances across all competitions and the Champions League win over Chelsea and DFB-Pokal win over Wehen Wiesbaden have been the only two matches thus far where he has not had a goal contribution.
In addition to his form for Bayern, Gnabry also scored a goal for Germany during the international break in their 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Northern Ireland.
While Gnabry’s start has been impressive, the season is still very young and there is a lot of football left to be played, so a lot can happen. His track record in recent seasons has shown that consistency is not something the club can come to expect from him, but Kompany would certainly love him to change that this time around, especially as the club pushes across all three fronts.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen recently spoke about Gnabry’s current form and said he is hopeful that it can continue throughout the remainder of the season. Without directly saying it, he’ll certainly have been aware of Gnabry’s track record of a lack of consistency as well as having injury problems in each of the last couple of seasons. “Serge is in great form. He’s having a fantastic season so far. We’re only at the beginning [of the season], but we all hope he can maintain this form. He’s in really good form at the moment – it’s a real joy to watch him,” Dreesen enthused (via @iMiaSanMia).
For now, Gnabry’s form is not quite a surplus to expectations, but if he is able to stay fully fit, healthy and in a good run of form up until Musiala makes his return to action, it will be interesting to see how many minutes Kompany will be giving Gnabry and Musiala is worked backed into the team. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Diaz are, for all intents and purposes, guaranteed starters at this point, and it would be difficult to see Gnabry supplanting a fully fit Musiala once he’s back up to match fitness, but it will then be up to Gnabry to make the most of the chances he gets.
