Where were you on November 18, 2025, when the Orioles sent Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels for one year of Taylor Ward? The trade was a shocker at the time as Rodriguez, though coming off an injury, was not yet arbitration eligible and still had four years of team control remaining and Ward had just one year of team control. Fast forward to today, and that trade may be ready to close one chapter and start another. The Orioles have struggled for much of the season and could look to move Ward at the deadline.
The Yankees’ outfield is crowded, but not necessarily in a good way. Aaron Judge’s injury has exposed just how little offensive depth the club has. Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham have both done their part, but could a move for a veteran right-handed bat to slot into left field be in the cards?
In 2025, Ward was the definition of a slugger for the Angels. He set a career high with 36 home runs while slashing .228/.317/.475. The Angels decided to cash in on that production, acquiring four years of a promising young pitcher. This season has looked very different. Entering Tuesday’s action, Ward ranked second in the majors in walks, already setting a new career high with 79. While he has been walking more than ever, he has been trotting a lot less as his home run totals have dropped into the Chesapeake Bay with only seven thus far.
An apples-to-apples comparison shows the tradeoff. The decline in power has come with a significant increase in walks and a drop in strikeouts. In 2025, Ward posted an 11.3 percent walk rate and a 26.4 percent strikeout rate. This season, those numbers sit at 17.2 percent and 20.5 percent, respectively. His batting average has rebounded to around his career norm, while his .386 on-base percentage ranks among the 10 best marks in baseball.
Baltimore has used Ward as its leadoff hitter for much of the season, and he has played almost exclusively left field over the past two years. It is easy to forget when Bellinger is out there, but left field at Yankee Stadium is widely considered the most challenging outfield position to play in the stadium. To that point, Ward grades out as a slightly below-average defender. He ranks in the 30th percentile in both range and arm strength. While he owns a respectable .994 fielding percentage, his defensive WAR sits at minus-0.2. For comparison, Ward has essentially the same sprint speed as Grisham but with slightly less arm strength.
Putting a hitter with a nearly .400 on-base percentage in front of Ben Rice and Judge certainly has its appeal. However, there is one catch that makes me believe Ward probably will not be wearing pinstripes.
Ward is owed only about $4 million for the remainder of the season. Because of that relatively modest salary, I expect both contenders and several fringe contenders/small-market clubs to drive up the asking price. The Phillies have been linked to Ward as have the Mariners, and Braves. There are also rumors that the Dodgers have been poking around Camden Yards scouting Ward.
The Yankees could certainly use another leadoff hitter to set the table, but between their current outfield mix and the expected return of Judge, there simply may not be enough value in giving up prospects for Ward alone. Unless, of course, he becomes part of a larger package similar to the deal that brought David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle, and Todd Frazier to the Bronx in 2017.
