A big day for the ‘Mericans on the blog as the USA can punch their ticket to the next round with a win over Australia. The Aussies were surprisingly good in a draw vs. Turkey in the first round, this should be no pushover. The other matches are intriguing, though maybe not as well matched. Still fun, though.
Here’s your daily recap and upcoming matches for today.
Day 8 Recap
Czechia 1-1 South Africa
Goals: Sadliek (6’) | Mokoena [PK] (83’)
My hot take is that neither of these teams are very good and this was maybe the first real dud match
of the tournament thus far. Pretty boring, Czechia probably should’ve won narrowly but South Africa were handed a dubious handball penalty late in the second half. Neither of these teams are likely to advance to the next round with one match left to go unless they do something weird like upset South Korea or Mexico next week. Doubt.
Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia Herzegovina (Group B)
Goals: Manzambi (74’, 90’), Vargas (84’), Xhaka [PK] (90+7’) | Mahmic (90+3’)
This match was boring… right up to the point where it wasn’t. A flurry of late goals made what was otherwise a bog-standard dull match something a lot more special.
Canada 6-0 Qatar (Group B)
Goals: Larin (16’), David (29’, 45+3’, 90+2), Saliba (64’), Al Mannai [OG] 75’
No witty commentary here, I didn’t watch it. But…. uhhhhh… that’s a paddlin’. I guess I should’ve.
Mexico vs. South Korea (Group A)
Goals: Romo (50’)
I feel bad for Sonny, but this was great content. Mexico and South Korea played to a virtual standstill and a likely nil-nil draw until a catastrophic mistake by Korea keeper Kim Seung-Gyu spilled a catch while falling over his own teammate, with Mexico’s Luis Romo there to punch the ball in the net. Korea spent the rest of the match desperately trying to score an equalizer and they came VERY close late in the match, with Mexico keeper Raul Rangel making a spectacular double-save to preserve the Mexico win. Son Heung-Min was subbed out after 50 minutes. A fantastic match; Mexico will win Group A and Korea can finish second with a win over South Africa.
