In what can only be described as one of the most chaotic deadline day sagas in recent Premier League history, Sunderland have secured a deal for Olympique Lyonnais winger Malick Fofana. After fending off interest from UEFA Champions League regulars like Arsenal earlier in the day and then overcoming a dramatic late hijack attempt from Crystal Palace, the 21-year-old Belgian international has signed and will play at the Stadium of Light, after signing a five year contract.

Who is Malick Fofana?
Born in Aalst, Belgium, Malick Fofana spent his formative years developing through the famed KAA Gent academy, before breaking onto the senior football scene as a teenager, racking up 64 appearances and 5 goals for the Belgian side.
His electrifying pace and 1v1 ability caught the attention of Olympique Lyonnais, who secured his signature in January 2024. During his time in France, Fofana established himself as one of Ligue 1’s brightest dynamic prospects, registering 19 goals across 84 matches in all competitions.
Fofana made his senior debut for the Belgium national team in October 2024 and has since earned 5 caps and scored once for his country.
What Do His Stats Suggest?
Analysing data across multiple scouting dashboards, and European league comparisons, Fofana makes for encouraging reading and his profile represents a high-volume, direct attacking weapon.
Best described as a dynamic, left winger who can also operate across the attacking line or as an inverted wide midfielder, he ranks extremely high when compared to other wingers across Europe’s Top 5 leagues on a variety of metrics. Fofana ranks in the 93rd percentile for attempted shots, the 88th percentile for progressive carries and the 94th percentile for expected goal involvements.
Compared to last season’s options, Fofana offers a far more direct profile. While Bertrand Traoré provided experienced ball retention and Nilson Angulo brought unpredictable energy, Fofana eclipses both in total goal threat. Compared to Chemsdine Talbi (4 PL goals last term), Fofana operates with greater transition speed and shot frequency.
The Verdict
Having faced stiff competition to secure his signature, the arrival of Fofana should be seen as somewhat of a coup by Ghisolfi and co in the late stages of the transfer window. Couple that with the shrewd price, it seems to be a very sensible deal from all aspects.
All reports indicate the Belgian is a real talent, and Fofana represents both an immediate first-team quality player and immense future resale potential. The signing is a massive statement of intent from Sunderland – beating off competition from UEFA Champions League regulars for a player of his profile underlines the club’s growing ambition under Régis Le Bris.
That being said, it does leave us somewhat overloaded on the left-wing with a newly contracted Romaine Mundle alongside Chemsdine Talbi and Nilson Angulo. What this means going forward only Le Bris will know, however Florent Ghisolfi’s statement offers an insight into how the club may manage this:
