The Utah Jazz will be travelling to Portland on Friday night to take on the Portland Trailblazers. Currently, the Jazz are dealing with a myriad of injuries that could make this matchup less interesting than one could hope. After a few late season adds in Anderrson Garcia, Blake Hinson, and Bez Mbeng, the team out of SLC is really just trying to see what they have in all the young guys before a hopeful return to relevancy next year.
It really is tale of two different outlooks. The Utah Jazz are a bottom
feeder and blatantly-tanking team. This is a game they hope to stay competitive in, but ultimately lose. The draw of adding an AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, or Cam Boozer is true strong. Even prospects like Darius Acuff Jr, Mikel Brown Jr, Caleb Wilson, Keaton Wagler, and Kingsley Flemings could add a whole new dimension to a strong projected starting lineup for Utah next year.
The Blazers are an up-and-coming mid-tier team. Sitting at 31-35 on the season, they will be without pure scorer Shaedon Sharpe in this one, and Damian Lillard has yet to suit up this season. Expect a lot of free throws for Deni Avdija, a first-time All Star this year. It’s honestly hard to tell what the expectation of this Portland roster is when looking at the future. They have some good building blocks in Shaedon, Deni, and Donovan Clingan…but a few of their other picks have left a bit to be desired (namely Scoot Henderson who has struggled to stay healthy).
The Jazz, on the other hand, look to continue to see what they have in Ace Bailey, who has been shooting decently the last few games. Brice Sensabaugh will also be showcased in this game, along with backup point guard extraordinaire Isaiah Collier. Cody Williams is certainly becoming a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none lately. Could this be a huge game for him? The runway is there for all of them to really show us what they got with Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen likely out for the remainder of this NBA season.
As far as lottery odds go, the Jazz are currently sitting with the 5th worst record in the league and it’s looking like they don’t move a lot from that spot. Brooklyn, Washington, Sacramento, and Indiana have all been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and that should happen to Utah any day now. Only two games back from the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks, every game is a must-lose for this Utah squad.
So, let’s go Jazz, I guess?
