All of us heard about the Cubs’ signing of Alex Bregman Saturday evening — right about the time the Bears were mounting their tremendous comeback win over the Packers. It was a great day for Chicago sports.
This morning, the Cubs announced the signing of Bregman by press release. It contained the following information that had been speculated, but now is official:
- Bregman will wear uniform No. 3. He had worn No. 2 throughout his career, and of course that number belongs to Nico Hoerner. Here’s hoping Nico wears it as a Cub for a few more seasons beyond 2026. As you can see above, Bregman wore a No. 3 Blackhawks jersey when he attended Monday’s game at the United Center. That’s Bregman’s wife Reagan next to him in the photo.
- Bregman will be in attendance at this weekend’s Cubs Convention at the Sheraton Grand Chicago. I would imagine that introduction will be quite the happy scene.
- There will be an introductory presser for Bregman at Wrigley Field tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 15, at 10:30 a.m. CT. You can watch that news conference live on Marquee Sports Network (and I imagine other channels, likely including MLB Network, will cover it live). I’ll have a wrap of that presser here at BCB when it’s complete.
Welcome to the Cubs, Alex Bregman! Looking forward to five years of great third base play.
