Max Eberl has reflected on the challenges that came with taking on one of the most demanding roles in European football, admitting that his arrival at Bayern Munich was accompanied by plenty of questions about whether he could handle the pressure.
As Bayern Munich’s board member for sport, Eberl has been tasked with overseeing major sporting decisions while operating under the intense scrutiny that comes with working for the club. For Eberl, however, the best response to that pressure has always been to focus
on the work itself.
“When I arrived at Bayern Munich, people wondered: ‘Can he handle it?’ I have had to work hard for everything, and I focus solely on my work. You have to experience Bayern Munich, you cannot prepare for it. You only truly learn what it is like once you are at the club. My guiding principle has always been to try to do a good job. That’s the strongest argument for a sporting director. I tried to push the public debate to one side to some extent,” Eberl told Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Eberl’s comments offer an interesting insight into the reality of working at Bayern Munich. The expectations are enormous, and every transfer, contract decision and sporting result can quickly become a public discussion.
Rather than allowing that noise to dictate his approach, Eberl says he has tried to let his work speak for itself.
