A new Mizzou Athletics sports season is officially upon us! While the last few years I’ve assigned this written piece to one of our talented photographers, I’m taking it over this year, and will be selecting my favorites of the week. Since I am not a photographer at heart, my analysis will be more surface level, but I’ll try my best!
Let’s face it, the talk of the town is the Mizzou dismantling of kansas 38-21 in Lawrence on Friday night, so I’ve decided to devote this week’s column to Dan’s incredible
photos. He writes his own captions too, so there likely isn’t much else for me to say.
Let’s get started.
Beat the Drum
I love this photo so much it is now my background on my phone. I’d also like to add, the drum IS the trophy for the winner of this game, and the other side of it is the Mizzou side. I think there’s been some erroneous reporting out there that Mizzou stole the kU band’s drum or something, and that is not the case (though it would be funny).
Kicker Woes
Mizzou’s special teams are a PROBLEM, even with a new coordinator, and while Blake Craig didn’t miss any extra points (thank god), he did have not one, but TWO field goal attempts blocked, which is just…. something. The other photo is the direct result of said kicking issues, resulting in a kU touchdown.
Which One are You?
By the end of the game, all that seemed to be left at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium was Mizzou fans, so this was obviously taken earlier in the night. This is the first time I’ve seen this Tigers flag, and I love it!
I also feel like this is one of those social media things where you pick out who you are in the crowd. There’s just so much to choose from— the kid down front in the no. 10 jersey with a blank stare on his face, the man in the old gold shirt and backward black hat being celebrating with two other guys, the dude on the right in the gold Tigers tee flipping off (I’m guessing) the opponent, the stoic faces of soooo many kansas fans…
Sticky Fingers
This is the first of several photos in this post that features a kansas Jayhawk defender left lying on the ground. I also love that Dan was able to capture this incredible catch by Cayden Lee.
Beaker Breakaway
Even though this was a good moment for the team with hideous uniforms and the even more ridiculously ugly helmets — did a child draw that bird?! — I loved the action in this photo and it almost looks like kU no. 7 is tackling his own teammate?
Double Birds
Dan sent the photo on the right to the Rock M football Slack channel, and I just KNEW I had to have it for this column. It’s just hilarious. I think that’s no. 10 Daeden Hopkins? Since Dan didn’t upload this one to media files, there’s no caption for me to refer to.
Pile On
Another photo that is simultaneously funny — there are SOO many defenders on the kU wide receiver — and just riveting to look at. There is SO much going on.
Jayhawk Down Part 1
My favorite parts of this photo are the angles and the dirt kicked up by the players’ cleats. I also like how no. 22 (Elijah Dotson) looks like he’s just watching in the background, egging the tackle by no. 7 (Kensley Louidor-Faustin) on.
Jayhawk Down Part 2
Tee hee. ANTOHER photo of quarterback Isaiah Marshall just getting annihilated by multiple Mizzou defenders, including no. 10 Daeden Hopkins and no. 0 Robert Woodyard Jr… We simply LOVE TO SEE IT, friends.
Joy
I love the joy on Jahlil Florence’s face in this photo after capturing his first interception since his sophomore season at Oregon.
Run, Run, as Fast as You Can
The kansas defense was no match for Donavan Olugbode, who had six receptions for 121 yards, or Austin Simmons’ bestie, Cayden Lee, who had six receptions for 120 yards on Friday night in Lawrence.
Face Plant
What can I say? I love photos of kansas players squirming, and this one is hilarious, as no. 23 on the Jayhawks faceplants trying to catch Jamal Roberts, who rushed for 125 yards (4.5 average) on Friday night. Besides the embarrassment of kU, I also just loved the freeze frame of Roberts midair, and no. 2 watching on.
