When Rob Wright first entered the transfer portal, some believed he would eventually return to BYU once he got someone to offer him more money and increase what the Cougars were offering.
After watching how things played out, it feels that may very well be what happened, as Wright ultimately spurned Kentucky Basketball for a return to BYU.
Less than 24 hours after Wright’s visit to Lexington ended, BYU announced he was returning to Provo for his junior season.
After that, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander
admitted that Wright’s preference was a return to BYU, not wanting to play for a third school in three years.
And in the end, Wright was getting about the same offer from Kentucky and BYU, according to Jeff Goodman, making for an easy call to stick with the Cougars.
Of course, it’s possible Mark Pope simply blew the visit to Lexington and that led to Wright going back to BYU, but at the end of the day, it just feels like Kentucky got played for more money and was only coming if the Cougars didn’t come close to what the Wildcats were offering.
This wouldn’t be the first time someone has used Pope and Kentucky to get more money from another school. Far from it. Frankly, it feels like that’s exactly what Tyran Stokes did with his visit, which doesn’t appear to have moved the needle in that recruitment.
Thankfully, Kentucky got Washington point guard Zoom Diallo in the end.
Here’s to hoping Kentucky can get some more big fish and not simply get used for more money while potentially missing out on other transfer options.
