On Tuesday, Marquette athletics announced that Calum Mallace has to pack up his desk in the Old Gym and move it to a completely different desk in the Old Gym.
Let me explain.
The actual announcement is that Mallace, one of the best players in Marquette men’s soccer history, is now the associate head coach for Marquette women’s soccer. The catch is that for the past two years, Mallace has been on David Korn’s staff as an assistant coach for Marquette men’s soccer. And so, he has to ever so slightly
move around the building in order to interact more with women’s soccer head coach Chris Allen and assistant coach Jacqueline Baetz instead of Korn and his other assistants, Sean Clancy and Zach Neiberger.
Mallace replaces Jennifer Wandt on the women’s soccer staff after one season with the Golden Eagles as she has moved on to the same position at South Florida.
Allen on his new AHC:
“Today is a great day for our program as we officially welcome Calum Mallace as our Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator,” Allen said. “A Marquette Hall of Famer, All-American, BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, MLS professional and one of the brightest young coaches in the collegiate game, Calum brings an exceptional combination of championship experience, tactical expertise, recruiting success and a deep passion for Marquette University. Most importantly, he is an outstanding person whose character, authenticity and commitment to developing student-athletes make him a perfect fit for our unique culture. Calum is Marquette soccer, and we are excited to see the impact he will have on our program and the legacy he will continue to build on the women’s side.”
Mallace on his new job responsibilities:
“I am incredibly excited and grateful to join the women’s soccer program as Associate Head Coach,” Mallace stated. “I want to sincerely thank head coach Chris Allen for his trust in me and for giving me this opportunity. Marquette holds a special place in my family’s hearts and mine, and the chance to remain part of the Marquette soccer family while taking on this new challenge is truly meaningful. I look forward to bringing my experience as both a player and coach to support the continued growth and success of this program. As a father of two daughters, I am deeply committed to helping these young women develop not only as athletes, but as individuals. I am excited to contribute to their growth on and off the field and to be part of their journey at Marquette.”
It’s an interesting move, perhaps one discussed between Allen and Korn, as it’s a little bit short notice for Allen to hire a new assistant coach what with the season starting in about two months and all. In terms of the trajectory of the two teams who both go into their third year with the current head coach, there’s not much that separates Marquette’s two soccer teams. Korn’s men’s soccer squads went 13-14-6 in his first two seasons, while Allen’s women’s soccer teams posted a mark of 13-18-7. That’s a little misleading relative to league competition, as Korn went 3-11-0 in Big East play while Allen’s teams have been 6-10-4 with Allen getting the edge of being able to play 10 BE matches a year as opposed to just eight for the men’s league. In short: Both teams are in need of a big change in trajectory, at least in terms of on the field results as we go into the 2026 season. We’ll see if Mallace changing sides of the fence has an impact on the women’s team moving up in the world come August 12th when they start the season with a road match against St. Thomas.
