It was 10 years ago (!?) today that Bayern Munich brought in Robert Lewandowski as a substitute and the Polish Hitman went on to score an amazing five goals in nine minutes in a match against Wolfsburg.
Our own Ryan Cowper wrote this at the time (in between his text, Cowper had embedded videos of each goal):
Every once in a while a Bayern Munich game transcends everything to becoming a moment of pure magic. Today was one of those games for Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich.
After picking up a knock
last week and sitting out the weekend’s festivities, Lewandowski started this match on the bench for Bayern Munich. In a match of such importance, the question of whether Robert Lewandowski could be the impact sub late in the match was on everyone’s lips. Replacing Thiago Alcantara in the 46th minute, Robert Lewandowski wasted no time in putting together something that is almost beyond words.
Robert Lewandowski notched four goals in six minutes, but the soccer gods were not done smiling on Robert Lewandowski today for they saved the moment of pure magic for goal number five…
Some days being a Bayern Munich fan is pure heaven.Today is one of those days.
Earlier this year, Lewandowski thought back about the moment and had this to say:
“I knew I’d scored the goals, but Thomas Muller pushed me to the fans after the game and I was like, ‘Why?’ OK, we won and I scored the goals, but I didn’t think I’d done something historic,” Lewandowski shared in the interview. “During those nine minutes, I think I was somewhere else; I didn’t think about how many minutes it took, or how many goals I scored. When I scored the first, I was thinking, ‘OK, it’s 1-1, you need a second’. After the second, ‘OK, you need a third, then we’ll be sure we’re going to win’.
“Then I scored the third and the fourth and the fifth, but I still didn’t think about how many goals I’d scored because I was looking for the next opportunity.”
If you need some help remembering the day…or you have never seen t, here you go:
Bayern Munich will get some down time…not much, but some.
The Bavarians are not back in action until Friday against Werder Bremen, so a day or two of rest will not be such a bad thing for a squad coming off of an arduous week.
