Newcastle United’s search for an additional attacking reinforcement is showing no signs of slowing down, with Matthias Jaissle’s side exploring several possibilities as the transfer window enters its final stretch.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo remains the No. 1 target, with Newcastle nearing an agreement with Lille, but the Magpies could have turned their attention toward another versatile attacker from Italy’s Serie A.
According to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Newcastle is interested in Roma’s Matias Soule
and contact between the parties is already underway.
“Newcastle is interested in Matías Soulé of AS Roma,” Aouna reported. “Contact is ongoing between the parties.”
TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey subsequently provided further details, reporting that Soule has been added to Newcastle’s attacking shortlist alongside Fernandez-Pardo and Stuttgart’s Bilal El Khannouss.
“Newcastle United are competing with North East rivals Sunderland for the signing of Roma winger Matias Soule, TEAMtalk understands,“ Bailey reported. ”Soule has been on Sunderland’s radar throughout the summer, with the Black Cats making an approach for the Argentina international in July. However, they were unable to agree terms with Roma at that stage and the 23-year-old has remained in the Italian capital while the Serie A side assessed their options.”
Roma had considered keeping Soule, according to TEAMtalk, but the Serie A club is working to bring in further attacking reinforcements. Those additions could open the door for the Argentine to leave before Tuesday’s deadline, with TEAMtalk reporting that a departure is becoming increasingly likely.
Newcastle, however, is far from alone in pursuing Soule, with TEAMtalk reporting that Sunderland has tracked the former Juventus player throughout the summer and already made an approach in July without reaching an agreement with Roma. Fulham, Everton and Brighton have also shown interest, while AC Milan has held talks regarding a potential move.
The 23-year-old Argentina international spent much of last season operating as a No. 10 or second striker but can also play from the right wing and cut inside onto his preferred left foot. Soule finished the campaign with seven goals and eight assists.
