Now that the NWSL is back, who continues to push for MVP honors?
After matchweek 11, here are our frontrunners for Most Valuable Player:
Olivia Moultrie
After another great performance by the young USWNT star, she made a case for MVP in Portland’s latest match against Racing Louisville.
Portland’s game flow depends on the midfielder, who has evolved into one of the league’s top creators. Moultrie’s 10 goal contributions (five goals, five assists) speak for themselves, helping the Thorns to stay in the top spots of the table.
Ashley Sanchez
Although the Courage are not at the top of the table, that doesn’t mean they’re bad this season. So far, they’re in the 6th position and reeled off four wins in a row. Of course, Ashley Sánchez has been key for the team’s success and more proof are the two goals she scored against Seattle.
And now that Manaka Matsukubo left for Chelsea, Sánchez will have a bigger chance to become the focal point of attack and shine brighter than ever.
Temwa Chawinga
The reigning MVP lost some ground due to the injury she suffered at the beginning of the year but she’s back and reloaded.
There’s a very noticeable difference when she’s on the field and when she’s not. Kansas’ results at the beginning of the season can attest to it. She scored in the 3-0 win against Denver, helping the Current to win their third consecutive game.
Now with a contract extension, Temwa Chawinga will continue to be in the Most Valuable Player discussion for years to come.
Mina Tanaka
Despite the loss Utah suffered in their last game against Chicago, where Mina Tanaka didn’t feature due to injury. She continues to be the engine behind this season’s Cinderella. Moreover, she has risen as one of the most complete playmakers.
When Tanaka touches the ball, she just elevates everyone around her and, therefore, the Japanese player is making a strong case for MVP.
Can Utah Royals finish the second half strong like in past seasons?
Barbra Banda
The leading player in the Golden Boot race continues to be pivotal for Orlando. Actually, her absence due to injury against Angel City showed her importance for the Pride, it damaged the team, which looked toothless in attack without her.
The Golden Boot leader’s status is one to monitor moving forward…
