Jey Uso’s popular entrance routine is a staple part of WWE’s weekly programming, as fans in the arena simply can’t get enough of yeeting with him on his way down to the ring. Jey also often runs it back after he gets to the ring. The end result is that his entrance can take up a ridiculous amount of time.
This shtick came under fire on some recent WWE PLEs when Jey did it in the middle of the match. For example, there was War Games at Survivor Series in San Diego, where the babyface team took a break
from war so that Jey Uso could run it back with his entrance music playing again.
Then there was his Royal Rumble entrance in Saudi Arabia, which actually lasted longer than the stated 90 second waiting interval. It was kind of bizarre watching Brock Lesnar get eliminated in such ho hum fashion while Jey was busy yeeting away. Uso tried to run it back after he got in the ring, only to be punched in the face by Roman Reigns.
In a new interview on the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast, Jacob Fatu was asked for his thoughts on fans who think it’s dumb when Jey runs it back in the middle of matches. The Samoan Werewolf says the critics should shut the hell up and just enjoy the show.
“Enjoy the show. Man, just shut the hell up. Just enjoy the show. Listen, obviously you keep watching it. Obviously if you’re complaining, you’re watching. Man, just chill. Just chill! Enjoy the show, okay? Obviously if you’re complaining about him yeeting, that means you’re watching him yeeting.
…Whoever [is] complaining about Jey yeeting, man, you used to yeet with him. You’re watching. You’re still yeeting. You’re still watching. Just enjoy the show, alright?”
Fatu continued by saying “enjoy the show” applies to any entertainment form, not just pro wrestling.
“Enjoy the show for all platforms, no matter what you’re doing in life. Life is just way too short. So enjoy life, enjoy what you love to do.”
Telling consumers of your product to shut the hell up and like it is always a very bad response, and not all that different from last year when Triple H told people to “fuck off” being a critic of WWE.
Fatu’s argument that if you’re complaining then you’re watching is a deflection that doesn’t address the actual criticism of Jey yeeting in the middle of those matches. WWE shows are 2.5 to 4 hours long and include a variety of performers, stories, and segments. It’s completely reasonable and rational for viewers to enjoy some of the content but not every aspect of it. Just because some fans take issue with Jey yeeting in the middle of War Games doesn’t mean they need to chill out, or that they aren’t enjoying the show, or that the way they express their pro wrestling fandom is wrong.
Earlier in the interview, Fatu brought up how everyone loved it when Rikishi and Too Cool took a dance break in the middle of the 2000 Royal Rumble match. That’s probably where he should have left it when it came to addressing people who don’t like Jey’s mid-match yeeting, instead of telling the critics to shut up and implying they should mindlessly enjoy whatever content WWE gives them. That’s not how being a fan works in any medium, and it’s weird that Jacob and Triple H don’t understand that.
What do you think about Jacob Fatu telling Jey Uso’s critics to shut the hell up and just enjoy the show? Give me your reaction in the comments below, Cagesiders.
