Commanders head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media on Wednesday morning before Washington’s training camp practice, something he’ll do regularly this summer. He hit on a number of topics before the practice session, which we’ll highlight here.
— Quinn was asked about receiver Terry McLaurin, and whether his presence during the offseason program and camp was quantifiable after he held-in during most 2025 season prep dealing with a contract dispute. While numbers may not support the impact, McLaurin’s
presence can be felt. The anecdote below shows how McLaurin is making an impact beyond his talent.
— Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is ready for another season anchoring the offensive line, and Quinn can tell he’s already at his best.
“He has a really high standard,” Quinn said. “That’s what I see. He’s rarely out of position. He has a good way of asking questions. He’s the superstar player who’s not afraid to get coached or corrected or to ask something. The thing I have been most impressed by is how cool a teammate he has been. The guys here love spending time with him and going down to where he’s training to spend time. Those are the small markers that you think of, that guys are going to seek him out.
“I remember last year, he told Josh (Conerly Jr.), ‘just get on a plane and come see me. Moments like that go unnoticed, about the teammate he is. The skill is there. He’s in fantastic shape coming in. … It’s incredible. He has a presence. He’s fit. He’s strong. He’s ready. He has been a really good teammate. That doesn’t show up on a stat sheet or when you’re looking into free agency and trades — there was more there than I even thought about the impact on other people he makes. I feel really fortunate that he’s here.
— Quinn said that Dorance Armstrong (knee) and Deatrich Wise Jr. (quad) are making progress while remaining on the active/PUP list. They’ll continue to work on the side during practice, and Quinn said both guys have “turned corners” and hit markers in the rehab process. That doesn’t mean a return for either player is imminent, though Armstrong is getting closer.
— The Commanders are in the middle of a required ramp up period to start camp, and Quinn said the Commanders will use it to work heavily on red-zone situations. He also said that the camp will be separated into blocks and install sections, all with an emphasis on creating a super competitive camp with stakes.
