It’s a sore subject to talk to Carolina fans about football these days. Even the most diehard Tar Heel football fans are fully aware that the program is in a very dark place, and whether or not we will see the sun anytime soon is unknown. It all hinges on Bill Belichick’s ability to adapt to college football and find a way to be at least half as successful as he was with the New England Patriots. None of us are expecting him to win a CFP title, but what fans are expecting is to at least be in the ACC
title conversation.
To put it bluntly: last season couldn’t have gone worse. All the hype around Belichick’s move to the college ranks ultimately resulted in a lot of embarrassment, a lot of confusion, and a lot of frustration. Perhaps we should’ve knew what was going to happen based off the roster that he put together, and honestly, this year’s roster isn’t a whole lot better. It really seems like Belichick is struggling with attracting good to elite talent to Chapel Hill, but also he’s a coach that has been known to make a lot out of a little. Who was Tom Brady before he was summoned to help the Patriots win the first of what ended up being many Super Bowls? Was Wes Welker really getting that much buzz prior to joining the team? Remember Julian Edelman? He was a seventh round pick. Belichick knows how to develop players, but his skills have been absent at UNC so far.
On3’s Andy Staples released a head coaches ranking in the ACC, and he ranked Bill Belichick second to last right above Stanford’s Tavita Pritchard. It’s clear that any faith of him becoming the coach we saw in the NFL is fading rapidly, and so today’s question of the day is: can Belichick find a way to prove everyone wrong and have a much improved 2026 campaign? The task is simple: finish above .500, beat one of Duke or NC State, and for the love of Dean Smith, win a bowl game. Completing two of these three tasks would be considered a solid step in the right direction.
So, let’s us know what all of you think in the comments below. Do you think Belichick can silence critics? Will he continue to waste everyone’s time and money? We want to hear from you.
