Barcelona have been warned that Lamine Yamal may still require surgery for his pubalgia and that his recent treatment will not cure the problem.
Yamal has withdrawn from the Spain squad after undergoing an “an invasive radiofrequency procedure” in a bid to ease his problems.
Renowned sports traumatologist Dr. Ripoll has given his take on the situation and offered a bit of insight into the procedure.
“The pubalgia that Lamine suffers from causes pain, and this pain has been treated in the last few hours
by a minimally invasive technique that consists of the introduction of needles into the painful area that transmit high-frequency electromagnetic waves whose objective is to act on the nerves so that they transmit less pain, act on the blood flow so that the inflammation decreases and increase the mobility of the area,” he told Marca.
“It’s a technique that doesn’t cure the injury , but it is palliative, it eliminates the pain. In other words, the footballer is still dealing with a long-term injury. I don’t share the euphoria of the last few matches where the player has been better, and we always think the prognosis is long-term and the treatment consists of managing his playing time. But, if he has an athlete’s hernia or there is already damage to the bone at the tendon insertion point, surgery is more likely. It’s a fight for an 18-year-old to avoid surgery and resume his career.”
Yamal will now get some rest over the international break, and the hope is that he will be able to return to action when Barca resume against Athletic Club on November 22nd.
