Will Smith was an early exit in Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after taking a foul ball off of his hand. Dalton Rushing replaced Smith in the top of the third inning.
Nick Gonzales fouled off a 1-1 offering from Emmet Sheehan that banged off of Smith’s right hand. Smith stretched and tended to his hand, showing visible discomfort behind the plate, but was able to complete the bottom of the second inning.
The Dodgers announced that Smith left Wednesday’s game with a right hand contusion.
Dave Roberts spoke with Kirsten Watson of SportsNet LA after Wednesday’s game, where he noted that Smith’s X-rays came back negative and is considered day-to-day. Roberts also spoke with the training staff about a potential call up to fill the void left by Smith.
“From what I understand, he’s sore. There was some swelling and got an X-ray. The X-ray’s negative, so that’s a positive— day-to-day. It’s going to be hard to imagine him in there for tomorrow… Most likely, we’ll probably bring someone up.”
Dalton Rushing went 1-2 with a single and a walk after replacing Smith as he assumes the primary catcher role in the meantime.
