Patriots quarterback Drake Maye revealed he received a pain-killing injection for his injured right throwing shoulder before New England’s 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX on Sunday night.
“They shot it up, so not much feeling. It was good to go, and it felt all right,” he said.
Maye originally suffered the injury to his throwing shoulder in the AFC Championship Game as he landed on his shoulder following a 13-yard scramble. He spent one practice limited before being held out of
another (due to an additional illness) but felt better upon arrival in San Francisco.
The quarterback then practiced in full all three days prior to the Super Bowl and reiterated he was feeling great.
Following the injection, Maye struggled against a dominant Seattle defense. Largely powered by some late fourth quarter production, Maye finished 27-of-43 for 295 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also lost a fumble on a strip-sack.
Maye didn’t believe the shoulder injury limited in him Sunday night.
“I think it’d be hard to say that,” Maye said. “I was feeling good enough to be out there. If I’m out there, I wouldn’t put the team in harm’s way to not be myself. Just didn’t make the plays tonight.”
While Maye’s second season ended on a sour note, it was an outstanding year for the 23-year-old Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro that leaves the arrow pointed upward. Following the game, Maye was emotional looking back.
“This hurts. It definitely hurts. They played better than us tonight,” he said. “They deserved to win that game. For the whole team and myself, what a journey it’s been for us. I love this team and those guys in the locker room. We left it all on the field and just came up short. We didn’t play our best, and that’s what happens. It’s going to sting for a while, but that’s what you sign up for.”
