As part of the goalkeeper transition, Manuel Neuer has been sharing minutes with his successor Jonas Urbig for the past three seasons. Speaking after the 4-1 win over VfL Osnabrück in the DFB-Pokal—where he started and played the entire match—Urbig stated that he is focused primarily on keeping fit rather than the number of games he will be playing this season.
“My goal is to stay fit and be available,” Urbig said (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “As for the number of games, we’ll see over
the course of the season. Last season it was 20, but I haven’t set myself a concrete number. All of us three goalkeepers want to stay fit to give the coach the chance to pick between us.”
Signs point to this season being Neuer’s last, though nothing has been confirmed at this moment in time. Next season at the earliest is when Urbig will be the official starting goalkeeper.
