It’s been one full season since BVB talisman Marco Reus said goodbye to the club, a heart-wrenching moment for all Borussia Dortmund fans, and many fans beyond the Black and Yellow. Marco Reus was emblematic of something we all hope for as fans; the player who never leaves, the guy who gives it all for the club, the one who feels like they love the team even more than you do. An infallible idol.
Reus left Borussia Dortmund and headed to the United States of America, keen to join up with a surging
LA Galaxy side in the 2024 MLS season. I think most of us know what happened next! Marco collected a MLS Cup in his first American season, helping his side to victory over the New York Red Bulls. It was a first for Galaxy since 2014, a great outcome for both club and player.
Reus joined that squad on the coattails of their momentum; his quality was obviously welcome, but they already had a thing going on. Reus just added some additional fuel to the fire.
This season? Not exactly the same.
Losing Ruqui Puig to an ACL tear has been absolutely detrimental to Galaxy and they pulled up dead last in the MLS Western Division. Remember also, MLS soccer is cruel to the victor. A meager two million dollar payout from the Cup did little ease the loss of Dejan Jovelvic, who notched 21 goals in 33 matches for Galaxy in 2024. Pair that with Puig and several injuries to Joseph Paintsil, and you’ve got a recipe for a crappy season.
There was one beacon of hope for Galaxy this season, and that was none other than our guy, the legend, Marco Reus. Reus did his damnest to keep Galaxy chugging along during this challenging period, providing eight assists and knocking in another five himself. He was Galaxy’s top creator, and for a large part of the season, was their top scorer as well.
The GOAT has been out since early September with a thigh injury, and regrettably, the MLS season has come to an end. It’s cooked for LA at this point, but Galaxy will be hoping Marco Reus has at least one more season in the tank, because in this one, he certainly proved his worth.
In his free time between games and seasons, Reus has lived his Americana dream, and it’s extremely entertaining. If you do not follow him and his wife Scarlett on Instagram, I recommend giving them a follow, they’re always up to something comically and stereotypically American, like dressing to the nines for halloween, or taking his daughters to a rodeo. I, for one, am glad Marco and his family are enjoying their pseudo-retirement.
I miss Marco, but I love seeing him continue to ball out in the USA. His career is coming tremendously close to its end, but seeing him lace up, even in white, is enough to keep me idolizing him, and I hope some of you as well.
