After a rough outing against Illinois last weekend, Duke struggled again against Tulane, giving up 34 points including four rushing touchdowns by Jake Retzlaff, who is the new quarterback since his predecessor, Darian Mensah, is now under center for the Blue Devils.
The Green Wave scored on its first, second and fourth possessions while Duke managed just a field goal, falling behind 14-3.
Tulane put up another 10 points before halftime and while Duke got a late touchdown, it was 24-9 at the half.
Duke
recovered a fumble and five plays later, Mensah hit Landen King for a touchdown to make it 24-16.
Tulane came back and scored another TD to go up 31-16.
The Blue Devils got another touchdown to cut it to 34-24 and tacked on a field goal with 1:22 left, but it wasn’t enough.
This was a winnable game for Duke that, unfortunately, they did not win. Now 1-2, the Blue Devils will see NC State in Wallace Wade next Saturday. The Wolfpack hasn’t always been great under Dave Doeren, but they’re reliably competitive and these two teams have a history of entertaining games. For Duke though, it’s suddenly critical.
