Joao Cancelo has spoken about his future and admits he’s not sure where he will play his football next season.
The defender is currently on loan at Barcelona from Al-Hilal and, as things stand, is due to return to the Saudi Pro League side in the summer.
Barcelona would like to keep Cancelo but it remains to be seen if a deal can be agreed. There’s also been talk of a move back to Benfica, and Cancelo has now shared his thoughts on what happens next.
“Playing for Benfica, just like at Barça, is out
of love. I have one year left on my contract; if I have to play in Saudi Arabia, I’ll play; if I have to play in Europe, I’ll play. It will depend on Al Hilal. When Barcelona calls, you can’t refuse. I feel at home here; I’ve adapted very well,” he told Canal 11.
“It’s difficult to say no to Benfica and Barça. I would love to play for Benfica, obviously, but I don’t know if it will be possible soon. Luckily, I’ve reached a salary level that’s hard for Benfica to match. I’m not going to play for free, but I have to reach a point where I don’t want to earn a lot of money.”
Cancelo’s made a positive impact for Barcelona since moving on in the winter, making 12 appearances this season already in all competition, but we’ll have to wait and see if he continues or departs again at the end of the campaign.
