In Thursday’s ACC Action, Wake Forest lost a tight game to Texas Tech, 84-83, Pitt fell to UCF 77-67 and Miami was the sole winner with a 99-72 victory over Elon.
Wake Forest gave Texas Tech a heck of a game
in the Baha Mar Championship and might have won if it had made a few less mistakes.
Juke Harris stole the ball down 79-77 with :26 left, but Nate Calmese turned it over and LeJuan Watts hit both his free throws to put the Red Raiders up 80-77. Jaylen Petty made another pair with :08 left.
Harris did something you don’t see every day: he scored 6 points in the last :03 seconds on a pair of threes.
He finished with 26 points on 8-13/3-5 and had 10 rebounds and showed a real instinct for the clutch. Toss in that steal and you know Steve Forbes feels good about his game.
Wake may have an issue in the post. Omaha Biliew was highly regarded in high school but after transferring from Iowa State, he hasn’t done much for the Deacs. Cooper Schwieger is his backup and he hasn’t made a significant impact yet. That’s something to keep an eye on.
Give the Deacs credit though: they took Michigan and now Texas Tech right to the wire, losing 85-84 and 84-83. Wins would be better obviously, but they wouldn’t have done this well last season.
It’s not the Brotherhood Run, not exactly, but Johnny Dawkins and UCF beat Jeff Capel and Pitt in the Legends Classic.
As we saw in Cameron, UCF is a very physical team. Pitt typically is too, but the Panthers just couldn’t keep up.
Cameron Corhen had 17 points and 11 boards and Demarco Minor had 14.
The Panthers shot poorly though, just 26% on their threes and 39% overall. UCF hit 33% of their threes and 52% overall.
No shame in this loss, but it drops Pitt to 4-2.
Miami was the sole winner but Elon wasn’t much competition.
Tre Washington had 18 points and 10 rebounds to help push ’Canes past the Phoenix. Malik Reanu had 19 points, Tre Donaldson had 18 and Shelton Henderson 16. Dante Allen added on 14.
Miami hit 9-21 on threes (38%) and 37-68 (54%) and while Elon shot well with 10-21 threes (48%) and 26-51 (51%), the Hurricanes forced 18 turnovers and out rebounded the Phoenix 38-22.
Reaneau, by the way, is averaging 21.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, which is pretty good.
