Welcome to the Bavarian Football Works daily Men’s World Cup match thread! Every day during this tournament we will have a feature thread for discussion of the day’s matchups.
Leading the way is the battle of the Iberian Peninsula. Later, former Bayern Munich academy talent Malik Tillman will take the field with the USMNT in a rematch of a 2014 World Cup knockout bout. There has been a ‘highly unusual’ eleventh hour intervention reversing one of many controversial referee decisions at this World Cup and
restoring the eligibility of USA striker Folarin Balogun, who had been red carded — a decision that could not be appealed. But for the second time this World Cup, FIFA has cited Article 27 to let a player play (the other time was for Cristiano Ronaldo).
This could have…interesting effects on the perceived competitive integrity of the tournament and the Belgians are, understandably, furious.
