Good evening, folks. Today’s Daily Bee is a little late because I spent all day preparing to teach an Introduction to Linear Regression session. The session went great. I got to spend an hour lecturing
the audience about the many virtues of the linear model and indoctrinating them in the gospels of the Church of Andrew Gelman.
Anyway, there has been a lot of contract talk in the news over the last few days. The Dortmund brass must have let their admin to-do list pile up, only to spend the last week panicking and trying to catch up because someone made them feel guilty about how messy they are. It’s fine. Everything gets done in the end. It’s not that big a deal. Get off my their back.
BVB News
- Serhou Guirassy is still dealing with the thigh injury he picked up just before the international break and might find himself on the bench against FC Köln, with Fabio Silva potentially earning his first start for Dortmund.
- Nico Schlotterbeck will wait until the new year to make a decision about his future. BVB are already making plans for the possibility that their star center-back may leave for free at the end of next season.
- Borussia Dortmund have begun negotiations with Karim Adeyemi over a new contract. BVB are expecting the negotiations to be a lengthy process, but they are prepared to pay the 23-year-old German good money to keep him at the club.
- There are a bunch of players with contracts expiring this summer. Julian Brandt and Alexander Meyer both look likely to be offered extensions, but everyone else will have until March to prove themselves. This includes Emre Can, who will need to prove his health, more than anything.

- Just days after claiming they would back Kauã Santos, Eintracht Frankfurt went ahead and replaced him with Michael Zetterer for their Champions League tie against Liverpool. Not that it made much difference… They got smashed 5-1.
- Wolfsburg defender Kilian Fischer will be out for at least a month with an ankle injury.
- Meanwhile, Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala has returned to training four months after his horrendous ankle injury.
Your Thoughts?
What is your favourite data science method? If we’re talking machine learning, I love gradient boosting (Catboost to be specific), but for inference, my go-to is always multilevel regression. Still, there is little more satisfying than the simplicity, flexibility, and elegance of a well-executed linear regression. Let us know in the comments.
