Despite roughly sixteen hundred breathless updates from Fabrizio Romano (and all the other wannabes) in the last few weeks, the situations of both Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku remain unchanged. One would imagine that their situations will still change before the transfer window slams shut in about ten days, but those changes will likely happen near the very end, after all the other domino pieces have fallen, and teams are left with their last remaining fallback options.
Whether it’s Newcastle
United, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Aston Villa, or whoever else, and whether it’s Nico or Christo, and whether it’s a loan or a transfer … any and all options are valid at this point. Every option is in play. No option is in actually in play however. Does that make sense? It’s Transfertown, Jake.
And of course one of those many options — though probably one of the less likely ones — is one or both players staying with Chelsea. After all, they’re still training with the first team and have not been exiled to the Bomb Squad™ to hang out with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell.
Enzo Maresca clearly isn’t wasting his own time worrying about any of these outcomes, though he’s made it pretty clear what he thinks would be best for all involved.
“[Jackson] is available but he’s not going to be part of the squad because [we] have two players in that position and also we know that something can happen before the transfer window closes. […] Christo is with us like Nico, but it’s the same.”
“[But] it’s not the moment [to reintegrate them]. We have still […] 10 days [and] it’s difficult to plan because anything can happen. [So] we’ll see if they are going to be here. They are going to be with us [but if] they are not here, that means that they found a solution.
“And at the end I think it’s always better if they can find a solution because I think they are going to be more happy and the club the same.”
