The last couple of games have provided some of the best play of the season for the Silver and Black, as they’ve taken care of a couple of teams that they should beat, and accomplished the task with a minimum of drama. When you can finish the game with your starters on the bench, it means one of two things, and in these particular instances, it was the good thing. The Spurs just beat the Wizards by 25 three days ago, but Washington kept the score pretty close for a little more than a half, ever [very] briefly taking a one point lead early in the second half. After a quick timeout and a tongue-lashing from Coach Mitch Johnson, the Spurs cleaned up their play and put the visitors away by outscoring them 62-46 in the final 22 minutes of the game.
The Wizards have some young talented players, including Alex Sarr and Bub Carrington, who played well in the previous game. Marvin Bagley is vastly improved, and he is looking like he’s found a home in Washington. CJ McCollum is always a thorn in the Spurs side wherever he plays, but the role players just didn’t show in San Antonio. With tonight’s game being in their home arena, they could get some more contribution from the rest of the roster and make it a more interesting game if the Spurs don’t have the kind of outstanding effort they’ve had in the last couple of games.
Victor Wembanyama has been on a minutes restriction and coming off of the bench since the OKC game in Las Vegas, where he has taken the Silver and Black to a new level in limited minutes. Stephon Castle was rookie of the year last year, but he might be the most improved player this year, since he’s taken a significant leap. Everyone on the Spurs deserves credit, but I should mention Devin Vassell, who is becoming a key player on both ends fo the court and finally fulfilling the potential that the front office always saw in him. The next thing to watch for is to see if the Spurs can remain consistently dominant against bad teams, or if they can lose focus and fall into the trap of taking wins for granted. That may be the biggest danger for the Spurs tonight against the 5-21 Wizards squad. I have confidence that Coach Mitch will keep the team focused, but I’ve been wrong before. If they get out to slow start tonight, the Wizard could get a win, as they did last night over the Grizzlies, 130-122.
So tune in on your favorite video/audio device and let’s watch the Spurs notch their 6th1 straight win. Go Spurs GOO!!
- As officially counted by the NBA.
