Hard to believe, but it is Champions League season already.
It feels like just yesterday we were still in the middle of the summer tournaments — but now, Bayern Munich has already checked three Bundesliga wins into the books and are facing a top opponent in Chelsea to kick off this year’s UCL group phase.
Chelsea, of course, won one of those summer tournaments — the Club World Cup.
The Blues have not quite carried over that form into the season yet, already having dropped points twice in the Premier
League, where they set fifth below the likes of Arsenal, Bournemouth, and Tottenham Hotspur. But Max Eberl, Bayern’s executive board member for sport, does not think this Chelsea team is any lesser than the one that smashed PSG 3-0 in the summer.
“I’m really excited for Wednesday’s match. I think Chelsea deserved to win the [Club World Cup] final, with their incredible energy,” Eberl said in comments captured by Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). “They haven’t gotten any worse since then. On the contrary, they will of course have become even more stable. But this energy is precisely our game, too. That’s why I believe a very, very exciting, high-quality match awaits us on Wednesday.”
It’s the first Champions League match of the year. Expect Bayern — and Chelsea — to bring the heat!
