Michigan men’s basketball head coach Dusty May has added three solid pieces to the front court for the 2026-27 season in former J.P. Estrella (Tennessee), Jalen Reed (LSU) and Moustapha Thiam (Cincinnati). However, the work isn’t over in the transfer portal just yet, as the Wolverines still had an open roster spot for next season.
The initial plan was for former Wake Forest wing Juke Harris to fill the open spot at the 3, but the Wolverines are reportedly out of the running, with most experts believing
he will eventually commit to Tennessee. While it sucks to miss out on a top target that visited for the national championship celebration, not all hope is lost, as it looks like May and company have already pivoted to other options.
According to multiple reports, but first being reported by Josh Henschke of The Maize and Blue Review, the Wolverines are in the midst of monitoring former Cal Poly wing Hamad Mousa.
“It’s unclear how far along the information gathering stage on Mousa is, but national sources have confirmed that Mousa is a name to keep an eye on moving forward,” Henschke wrote.
Mousa, who began his college career at Dayton but transferred to Cal Poly last offseason, is a 6-foot-8. 200-pounder originally from Qatar. He played sparingly in 20 games as a true freshman at Dayton, but shined at Cal Poly last season. In 31.3 minutes per game, Mousa put up 20.4 points (best in the Big West), 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He shot 44.3 percent from the field, 37.2 percent (84-for-226) from beyond the arc and 87.8 percent at the free throw line.
For those efforts, Mousa was named First-Team All-Big West, Second-Team NABC All-Pacific, and a finalist for the Riley Wallace Award, which is given to the most impactful DI transfer — Yaxel Lendeborg was the recipient of the award this year.
Mousa was unranked coming out of high school, but is now the No. 92 overall portal player per 247Sports, and No. 86 per On3.
