The USMNT got here by winning Group D despite a final matchday loss to Türkiye with literally the final kick of the match. Now, the knockout stage is here and in a nation that loves one-and-done tournaments, we’ve reached that part of the journey. The USMNT cannot look ahead
to anything beyond what’s immediately in front of them, and right now that’s a Bosnia & Herzegovina team that will be tough.
Bosnia & Herzegovina got here by finishing third in Group B, beating Qatar on the final matchday to earn enough points in the group to qualify for the Round of 32. Sure, they’re the team that has to go up against the co-hosts, but they will not approach this match like they’re the underdog. They are determined to make things difficult for the United States. It will be an emotional moment for Bosnia winger Esmir Bajraktarević, who is from Appleton, Wisconsin, is called the Milwaukee Messi, and had one cap for the USMNT before switching his allegiance to Zmajevi (The Dragons). He hit the penalty that sent Bosnia & Herzegovina to the World Cup, and he likely wants some poetic justice to end the USMNT’s dreams.
