Portland Trail Blazers center Robert Williams III will enter unrestricted free agency when the new NBA fiscal year opens in July. According to the latest Stein Line substack [subscription required], the Boston Celtics may be looking to reacquire their former pivot.
The mention was brief, couched in discussion of the New York Knicks possibly chasing center Kevon Looney if Mitchell Robinson departs the fold. The Celtics are also rumored interested in Looney.
It is believed that Looney is also on Boston’s
list of center targets, which is likewise known to feature former Celtics big man Robert Williams III.
Williams came to the Blazers in October, 2023 as part of the flurry of deals surrounding Damian Lillard’s departure to the Milwaukee Bucks. The 28-year-old center has played 85 games for Portland over three seasons, averaging 6.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 17.1 minutes per game over 59 appearances for the Blazers last season. He earned $13.3 million in the final year of his current contract.
