After getting a chance to be the starting quarterback for his childhood team, Carson Wentz was then failed by the coaches. The QB was handed the Vikings offense after J.J. McCarthy suffered an injury that would sideline him for multiple weeks, and did enough for some to wonder if he should continue to be the starter — instead, his season will end early on IR.
Wentz’s third game as the starter for Minnesota was in London against the Browns. It turns out that the former Eagles quarterback actually suffered
a dislocation in his shoulder than ended up tearing his labrum and fracturing the socket. This injury happened halfway through the international game, and yet Wentz still went on to tough it out for 2.5 more games — including the Week 7 reunion with the Eagles.
Things looked really bad for the QB last Thursday night, against the Chargers, with Wentz emotional and in excruciating pain as he got pummeled over and over again. Even with the team losing by three scores, and despite Wentz being sacked five times, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell continued to send the injured quarterback out on the field.
It was tough to watch.
Wentz was in agony and also dealing with the emotions of playing really bad football and the game being over with a lot of time left on the clock. Now we know the full story and Wentz will undergo surgery on his shoulder in the coming weeks — he and his wife are expecting their fourth baby any day now, and he’s waiting for the birth before undergoing his own procedure.
Feelings about Carson Wentz since he left the Eagles have varied, but of all the criticisms lobbied his way, very few were ever about his toughness. The QB played through a torn ACL for the Eagles to secure a first-round bye on their way to their first Super Bowl victory — toughness was never the issue. He’s proven that time and time again.
