Nothing like some good news to start a Tuesday morning if you’re the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
The team announced that second-year defensive back Nick Emmanwori, who began training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, has passed his physical. Based on the wording of the team release, Emmanwori hasn’t been formally removed from PUP, but it seems like it’s imminent.
Emmanwori dealt with multiple ankle injuries last season, including a scare during Super Bowl week practice
that ultimately did not keep him out of Seattle’s blowout win over the New England Patriots. He was placed on PUP following ankle surgery to address the lingering ankle issues, which didn’t prevent him from practicing during OTAs and minicamp but proved to be too bothersome to continue into camp.
The Seahawks have practice on Tuesday through Friday before their preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys, which Emmanwori almost certainly would not be playing in anyway. If Emmanwori practices literally at any point from now until the end of preseason, then he’s definitely off PUP and on track to play Week 1 against the New England Patriots. The Seahawks, led by head coach Mike Macdonald, have been noncommittal as far as recovery timeline, with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler saying that Week 1 is not a certainty.
We now wait and see how the next chapter of Emmanwori’s recovery goes. He’s already become one of the most important parts of Seattle’s top-ranked defense, and it’d be huge if he’s a go for opening night.
